Tips on wearing:

Although the instructions from New Native (included with each brand new sling) suggest putting the sling on mum or dad first and then laying baby inside, I've actually found it much easier for both parent and baby to first lay him/her inside the sling, and then pick up the whole sling and baby and put it over mum or dad's shoulder/head. The few times we've tried putting our baby into the sling, which we'd already be wearing or have draped across our body, it always (albeit not very rationally) always a bit too crowded or cramped to get baby in comfortably. So it was much easier while the fabric of the sling is slack and relaxed to make sure baby was first securely laying inside it, before putting the whole thing on.

Suggested instruction:
  1. Lay the sling down on a stable flat surface (ideally soft-topped such as a couch or a bed) with the stitched edge up top and the folded edge down, and the New Native label facing up. In this way, the "openings" of the folds should be facing your right.
  2. Now fold back (like turning pages of a book) the first three folds, thereby "opening up" the "pocket" or flap for your baby.
  3. Lay your baby gently on the sling, centered both vertically and horizontally.
  4. Then pick up the left-most two folds (still folded), and lift those over your head and right shoulder, spreading them out across your back.

So now your baby should be in the sling laying diagonally across your chest with his/her feet pointing towards your right side and his/her head should be up on the left side of your chest.

  5. Adjust for comfort, in that depending on how your baby was placed on the sling in the first place, you may want to shift the sling so that his/her head can see out, or at least so that their head isn't below their feet, or in any other unnatural position.
  6. Ensure that the flaps across your back are pulled out taut, but still folded up as the stitch up on your left shoulder encourages and maintains.
Since the cotton will stretch with carrying (as natural cotton does), it will probably be more comfortable to always wear the sling in the same way. However, it's easy enough to reverse the directions above in order to lay your baby across your right shoulder instead of your left (just put baby in the first "pocket" comprised of the first two folds (instead of the last two) and then pick up the sling with baby inside with baby's head towards your right shoulder, and feet pointing to your left side, and put your right arm/shoulder and head through.
